Cummins Women’s Leadership Network Group
Recently our board was invited to meet with the Cummins South Pacific Women’s Leadership Network Group (WLNG) to discuss issues we may have in common.

I was privileged to be able to attend today and what an inspirational group of women they are.

Hats off to Cummins for having a culture in their workplace that allows their women to network and think tank on ways to attract people to the industry and work on other issues such as work in the community.

There were representatives in attendance from Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne and New Zealand.

School visits
Alice Springs High School pupils have been getting visits from Liz and Marie from the National Road Transport Hall of Fame, talking to them about the transport industry and career paths available.

Well done girls, every little bit helps in educating our young, and this is especially relevant and important given the shortage of interested applicants for all areas in our industry.

Monday 5 May 2008

National Trucking Industry Woman of the Year Finalists
Our congratulations go to members Helen Savage and Carol Single who are both finalists in the National Trucking Industry Woman of the Year Awards.

It is wonderful that each year Transport Women Australia has members of such high calibre who reach finalist status. Well done ladies.

The third finalist Chris McGregor was a popular speaker at our conference last year and congratulations also go out to her.

Transport Women take on Fuel Issue
One of our members has had enough of the high fuel prices and has started an email campaign to MP’s and Politicians, alerting them to the difficulties we are facing in this industry.

If you wish to take part in this campaign by email or mail, contact admin@transportwomen.com.au and we will forward you the draft letter and lists of addresses.

Good on her, that’s what this industry needs – more people to take a stand and shout from the rooftops about their issues.

Transport Women Board
Now is the time to start thinking about whether you could spare some time to work for the better of our industry.

We always lack people who are prepared to put up their hand and give a few hours of their time, so if you had ever thought about it, why not give it a go.
The main prerequisite is keenness to have a go, anything else can be worked around.

Our AGM is in September this year in WA so start the wheels of thought in motion, you never know, you may enjoy it.

ATA Trucking Industry Women of the Year Winners Reunion

ATA Council meeting and AGM
Transport Women Chair Pam attended these meetings in Canberra recently and came away with an appreciation for just how much the ATA is doing for our industry, albeit most people are not aware of this and think that it is just the big wigs making all the decisions.

The state and sector organisations are there working for you, the industry, so if you have issues that you think are not being addressed then tell someone who can pass on the message on your behalf.

Floods in Queensland
Queensland member Carol Single and her family have had a torrid time this week with the extreme wet at Mackay.

While husband Ian was flat on his back literally (with a crook back), Carol was doing what women around the country do in a crisis - trying to keep everyone else sane and together.

With the bridge at Walkerston under six feet of water and the road to their property one metre under, and a two year old granddaughter under foot, Carol set out on the tractor to see if she could pick up her daughter and new grandchild from the hospital they were being evacuated from immediately after the birth.

Large funeral for trucking identity
The transport industry came out in force on Friday 7th December to pay their respects to the late John Kelly.

John's funeral was attended by well over 400 people from all parts of the trucking industry and other communities as well as from overseas.

John's wife Jenny has thanked the industry for it's massive support and is touched by the esteem in which he was held.

Tuesday 4 December 2007

RIP John Kelly
It was with great sadness that we received the news that our great friend and supporter, John Kelly (JK) from NTI in Sydney had passed away suddenly on Sunday morning 2 December.

John was a true believer in Transport Women Australia Ltd and was the instigator behind the support from our Foundation Business Partners from those very early days.

On a personal level John and his wife Jenny were very dear friends of ours and we along with many others are devastated by this great loss to the industry.

Informing the Community
We at Transport Women Australia Ltd are currently putting in place a program of visits to community groups and organisations to do some positive PR about our industry.

Melissa Strong, the National Trucking Industry Women of the Year is working with us on this project, and kicked off the program with a speech on Mateship, Safety and Company Culture at the Australian Truck Drivers Memorial at Tarcutta on October 27th.

Transport Women Australia Ltd was well represented with Liz Martin, Vice Chair travelling over from Alice Springs to lay a wreath on behalf of the industry, Pam McMillan, Chair, working there as part of the organising committee and Melissa as a speaker.

We are working on making this a formal mentoring program that will be available to other companies.

In vehicle phone Kits
Do your drivers have in vehicle phones?

Do you know about the plans to have no in vehicle kits with the new Next G network?
How do you feel about gluing your mobile in to your car or truck?

Pretty second hand way to treat the Trucking industry who collectively must own hundreds of thousands of mobile phones.

You should be shouting from the rooftops to make sure someone hears our concerns – Telstra and the other providers make a motza of money from our industry – they damn well should take notice of our concerns.

Friday 7 September 2007

Award Winners as Spokespeople
Melissa Strong from Roadmaster and a former board member of Transport Women Australia Ltd won the Trucking Industry Woman of the Year award in April this year. Melissa had some stiff competition from other Transport Women members, and is a credit to her company for all the hard work she puts in for the industry and to the community.

Melissa has won a well deserved overseas holiday courtesy of Cummins who sponsor the award and we know she will have a ball.

Melissa and I have been having talks recently to see how the award winners could be utilized to profile the good parts of our industry.

Shortage of not just drivers
We recently advertised for an office assistant here at TWAL and with all of the applications we received three were really decent.
At different stages of the week I gave the job to those three ladies and within hours they all phoned back to say they had a better offer.

It appears that it is not just driving that seems unattractive as an occupation, I got the impression that working in a transport office was not desirable either, regardless of what the duties were.

We all enjoyed massages and great coffee courtesy of the girls from Shell, and were treated to many giveaways including chokkies, champagne flutes and drink bottles.

This was another glorious day and the crowds flocked to the Trucks out West Expo at Dubbo on 2 Sept.
Our Transport Women stand had a steady stream of people coming to chat about who we are and what we do.

Full credit to the Australian Road Train Association for this great event and thank you for allowing Transport Women to be part of it.

Alice Springs breakfast
What a beautiful morning greeted us for our annual breakfast in Alice Springs at the Road Transport Hall of Fame. We were entertained musically by Greg and Leigh Livesay and Greg also MC’d the morning. Almost sixty attendees were treated to Marilyn Hams talking about her hilarious exploits on the road over the years.

It is great to see all those husbands, partners and even groups of men coming along, and several Wall of Fame Inductees including Noreen Blanchard, John Nyhus and Marilyn Hams.

Mark your diaries - next conference
The Transport Women board met in Canberra on 4 and 5 August and due to the conference feedback we received, we decided to hold another conference next year.

It will be at the same location- Hilton Airport Melbourne, and on the same weekend in June - 16 and 17th.

Melbourne was the most economical in terms of travel and the easiest place to get to from right across Australia, so keep the dates free.

Planning has now started on the program, however if you have any suggestions for topics or workshops, please let us know as soon as you can.

Tuesday 1 August 2006

Planning and sponsorship
The directors will be holding a board meeting this coming weekend in Canberra, and whilst we are still glowing from the after effects of our conference and the results from our research,we won’t let those feelings cloud our judgment as we work out what our future holds.

What is blatantly obvious to us is that we need more sponsorship or funding if we are to continue on new paths and expand our activities.

Your board are all full time workers in their own businesses and so volunteer their time for Transport Women Australia.

Geared up and Going Places Conference report
This was our first time around and I think we did pretty good, in fact I know we did.
It was a lot of hard work and nerve wracking in that last week but we had brilliant speakers, interesting and relevant topics, a great venue and a terrific group of delegates.

The congratulatory letters are still coming in and this is just terrific for our organization.

I have been to and participated in lots of conferences over the past twenty years, and this one took the cake as far as friendship, camaraderie and that feeling of being comfortable amongst your peers.

Hard work pays off.
When we released the results of our research in April, I’m sure that everyone thought that was the end of it but how wrong they all were. We have been busy sending out copies of the research to politicians right across Australia – are you aware there are more than 800? Think about what that means in terms of the perks involved.
A lot of those envelopes have had to be hand addressed and as I’ve previously mentioned we are a bit light on with hands on deck with board members based in other states.

It is not too late to book, you'll kick yourself if you miss out because the program is terrific.

Opportunity to be on the board
Transport Women Board

Calling all interested people, if you have ever thought about being involved in your industry, if you are keen to meet new people and go places. If you think you have something to offer other women in the industry or just want to lend a hand – well we need you.

Nothing has brought this home to us as much as putting together a conference when there is no secretariat and we all work in full time jobs. We just simply need more people, and then we could actually accomplish more, because we have big ideas but do not have the capacity to do anything about them.

Research paper released
Saturday 22 April saw the release of the Transport Women Research paper on the Continued, Social and Economic Viability of Owner Operators and Small Fleets in Rural, Regional and Remote Australia.

Pam and Liz walk the corridors of Parliament
Canberra

We are just back from a whirlwind visit to Canberra where Liz Martin and I presented the results of our Transport Women Research to Ministers and Politicians.

I have to say that it went really well, all but two were really receptive to what we had to say and we were confidant that our visit wasn't the end of it. Without fail they were all unaware of the extent of the financial pressure smaller operators are under, but hopefully we have left them with a better understanding.

NTI's new Roadteam member
The following is an excerpt of a letter from one of our members Heather Burdon from SA. Good luck to Heather and well done NTI for thinking laterally.

"I have taken up an offer from NTI to become a Roadteam Agent.

After selling our livestock business in 2003 (after 30 years) and a two year break I was looking for a "challenge."

NTI's aim is to recruit people with industry backgrounds, who are regionally based and as importantly, who can have informed discussions with operators, not only about their insurance requirements, but the transport industry as a whole and issues currently being faced.
